Though that isn’t to say that the Interdependency of John Scalzi’s new space opera isn’t full of its fair share of morally corrupt people clutching at the reins of power. No, they’ve simply made the basic mistake of taking the universe for granted and assuming it worked for them, which it doesn’t.

The collapsing empire of The Collapsing Empire doesn’t collapse because the power-hungry hubris of its ruling class leads to its own undoing, or anything that would fit the needs of a shallow morality play in that fashion. The universe doesn’t care about humanity’s grand schemes, our lust for power and wealth, our need to bend history to our will so as to ensure our place in it. What can hurt our pride the most is the realization that everything around us is simply going to go on existing, doing what it does, and it all just doesn’t care. The saying is that pride goeth before a fall. Probably the single biggest trapdoor that human arrogance always seems to fall through is the belief that the universe is as in love with our egos and ambitions as we are.
